Household Establishment Funds (HEF) Program

The Louisiana Family Recovery Corps has launched its most recent iteration of the Household Establishment Funds (HEF) program in St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and Washington parishes. For more information on the program, please see below.

When hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit in 2005, winds, rain and flooding not only destroyed homes, but also the contents sometimes taken for granted—such as furniture and appliances. Since then hurricanes Gustav and Ike unleashed their devistation on the residents of Louisiana.

As assistance from FEMA and insurance companies has run dry, many families still live without the necessities required to re-establish their households to their pre-hurricane existance. Providing the basics families need to rebuild is a vital step in the ongoing human recovery process.

Through one-time financial assistance, the Recovery Corps provides financial aid to ease families' household re-establishment. The Household Establishment Funds (HEF) program offers assistance for rental deposits and payments, utility deposits and payments, and household funrnishings such as beds, stoves, washing machines, dryers, and refrigerators.

To date, HEF has dispursed more than $12 million to nearly 10,000 households across the state of Louisiana for utility and rental deposits, appliances, and furnishings. HEF family liaisons also have worked to transition residents of FEMA trailer communities into more permanent and sustainable living arrangements.
